The Impact of Social Media on Body Image: Navigating the Pressure of Perfection

Social Media has become an increasingly significant part of daily life for many of today’s youth. Specifically, the most popular platforms such as Instagram, Tiktok and Snapchat shape how individuals interact with the world and with themselves. However, social media usage is linked to body image concerns, which can escalate into more serious issues of eating disorders and cycles of disordered eating.  According to research by the NIH (National Library of Medicine), evidence from 50 studies across 17 countries reveals that social media can trigger disordered eating behaviors and poor mental health through several ways such as social comparison, and the propelled image of thin or “fit” ideals. While social media is a gateway to entertainment, there is a darker side to it for many users as it influences their perceptions of their bodies.

Oftentimes, we are presented with a purposefully manipulated and perfected version of someone’s life on social media. With access to more editing tools and apps, more youth are exposed to edited and idealized representations of beauty. Most often on platforms such as Instagram and Tiktok, weight loss trends are out of control with influencers sharing “healthy” recipes and exercise routines meant to achieve the media's idealized physique. Frequently, these “healthy” recipes shared on Instagram and Tiktok do not offer enough nutritional value for sustained energy and not eating enough can in turn lead to increased nausea and fatigue along with other things. Additionally, most often on tiktok, content creators have been sharing “what I eat in a day” videos or fitness routines, all of which foster unhealthy comparisons. These videos, which can receive thousands of likes and views, subtly encourage viewers to conform to the same restrictive eating habits or workout routines.

In light of these harmful trends, it is crucial for users to engage with content that promotes a healthier, more realistic view of body image. Following influencers and creators who advocate for body positivity and mental wellness can provide a counterbalance to the pressure exerted by weight loss trends. Influencers who emphasize diverse representations of beauty can help shift the narrative from unattainable perfection to acceptance and empowerment. Most importantly, social media platforms need to take greater responsibility in addressing and removing content that perpetuates unhealthy and harmful content for its users.
